Dry needling is a technique used to treat muscular pain. It can also treat a range of movement issues that are muscular in origin. Whereas traditional acupuncture focuses on inserting needles into predetermined points in the body relating to energy flow, dry needling focuses on areas of tension within the muscle.

Thin solid needles are inserted into or near 'knotted' areas called trigger points which are tight bands of muscle that develop due to stress, overuse or injury. The effects of trigger points may be felt at the location or elsewhere in the body and can cause stiffness and limited mobility.

The needles can remain in the muscle for up to 20 minutes (depending on the response) and can be activated in a number of ways to prompt a muscle spasm known as a twitch response. Stimulating a trigger point in this manner increases blood flow which encourages the body's natural healing process - aiding in recovery and relieving pain, stiffness and tension, increasing flexibility and range of motion.

Alexa is able to offer Dry Needling as part of a Sports Massage where appropriate and with your consent.

Hi everyone I’m Charlene, co-owner of My Pilates Fix Studios, directly opposite Upminster Station. At My Pilates Fix we occasionally make charitable donations, but now we’d like to go a step further and offer some free Studio space one afternoon each week to an adult Charity group who need a space to meet on a regular basis (for as long as we have the availability).

Our little family have previously been on the receiving end of valuable support for a former Breast Cancer diagnosis, and therefore we’d love to offer this to a Cancer support group or similar.

Do you suffer with your neck? Does it stop you from taking up Pilates? Of course strengthening the muscles around the Cervical spine (neck area) is a positive thing, however, necks are an incredibly delicate and vulnerable area, so this has to be done with great care. We discourage overextension of the neck (taking the head back with chin upwards movement to the extreme) … particularly when against gravity. Even in our ‘flexion’ (neck bending forward) exercises the head is often supported by the hands … BUT … in the few exercises where the neck is unsupported (we don’t do LOTS of these) we try to ensure you’re in a good position, and if you cannot achieve this, or don’t feel comfortable, we pop a little ball or support under the head so that you can still participate but without any neck strain. So you can feel assured that you’ll be taken care of with us 😊

Engaging in Pilates as part of a prehabilitation programme prior to surgery offers significant benefits both physically and mentally. It boosts core stability, improves flexibility and postural alignment and can lead to a more efficient recovery process.

In the modern world, stress is no longer experienced in response to an occasional threat, as it once was, but has become a constant part of everyday life. Persistent stress and activation of the ‘fight or flight’ response halts non-essential functions such as digestion and repair. It is well known that chronic stress is linked to numerous adverse health outcomes and so finding effective stress-management strategies and ways to neutralise the ill-effects of unavoidable stress are more important than ever.

Pilates and mindful movement are popular tools for stress reduction and have been found to be associated with better sympathetic nervous system regulation as well as reduced waking and evening cortisol, reduced cholesterol, reduced blood pressure and fasting blood glucose. WHY LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE AND WHAT IS LYMPH?
The Lymphatic system works alongside the Circulatory system, removing waste products such as excess tissue fluid, fragments of damaged cells and tumour cells, and foreign matter such as micro-organisms and toxic substances. The movement of Lymph is encouraged by muscular movement and pressure through massage.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a very gentle and specific form of massage which can promote detoxification and assist in the avoidance of a build up of waste products and fluid, which can aid anything from stress, fatigue, bloating and the function of the digestive system, to recovery from sporting performance or injury and general health.
