Agh, one of our treasured teachers – Stephanie – has sustained a fall down the stairs and a sprained ankle!! She was admittedly running up and down the stairs with things in both hands, tidying up - not the best idea (but we’ve all done it!).

She says “I saw my ankle twist right round underneath me and I landed on my back. The pain in my ankle was intense. A trip to the x-ray department showed no broken bones and advised a sprain with a 2-3 week recovery period so it could have been much worse. On reflection (and when the doctor showed me the x-ray) I am so grateful to have been doing Pilates for many years with Charlene and Neil and then becoming a teacher myself. All the teachers at My Pilates Fix hold additional Bone Health qualifications and we are working with many clients who are trying to manage Osteoporosis (brittle bones). I teach ankle strengthening exercises in most of my classes, which means that I do them myself to demo several times a week. I also tell clients to do them while they are waiting for the kettle to boil - and guess what - I do too! I am sure that is why I have a sprain and not a break. I'm so grateful to the practice of doing Pilates for protecting my body. I am now back to teaching, just 8 days after the sprain, and am focusing on my ankle rehab exercises at home.”

ARE YOU LOSING HEIGHT?
My young teenage son is desperate to be taller than me, and we measure and compare our heights for fun on a regular basis. Yesterday he had made huge gains and for the first time was an inch taller than me!!! So I insisted on a ‘re-match’ but this time I did Pilates for half an hour prior to our measure … and guess what … I gained over half an inch!!! He was still happy that he was STILL taller, and I was happy that Pilates is clearly doing so much good for my spine (and my height). A win win!

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle massage technique with very light painless pressure that stimulates the lymphatic system to remove excess fluid, reduce swelling, and promote healing. The practitioner uses a range of specialised and gentle, rhythmic, pumping techniques to move the skin, thus stimulating the Lymphatic system to work harder.

MLD can be extremely helpful after Breast Cancer treatment and also with a range of other health dysfunctions and swellings, and also as part of surgery recovery.

As part of the immune system, Lymph nodes are located throughout the lymphatic system where they remove harmful substances, including cancer cells, before returning the filtered lymph back to the blood.

Lymphatic vessel disruption is a common side effect of breast cancer therapy. Where lymph fluid does not return optimally to the bloodstream, Lymphoedema (swelling) can occur alongside discomfort and pain. Breast cancer surgery including lymph node removal may disrupt the flow of lymph, and radiotherapy may result in scarring and inflammation in the lymphatic vessels.

Lymphatic drainage massage is supportive, helping to gently encourage lymph through the body towards working lymph nodes. Being diagnosed with Breast Cancer is indescribable. When I was diagnosed with early stage Breast Cancer back in 2022 my head was spinning. Was this the end? How would my husband cope? How would we tell our children? How could he take care of me AND the children AND run our Pilates Studio single handedly? The last thing on my mind at that point was having to navigate the life altering effects of the forthcoming treatment and surgery and struggle with the effects for years to come.

At My Pilates Fix Studios we are introducing Breast Cancer rehabilitation courses, to support women going through their experience of Breast Cancer. Within a small group of 6 participants, specialist Cancer Rehabilitation Physiotherapist Dr Karen Robb will take you through safe movement and strengthening, breathwork, side effect mitigation, mindfulness and fatigue management. Within this safe and supportive environment you will have the space to ask questions and share experiences. These courses are designed to support recovery and wellbeing, either before, during and/or after treatment. Our next course will run for 6 consecutive Fridays at 6pm from 26th June.
