Today is our Wedding Anniversary – too many years to count!! We met in 1992, Neil a lifeguard back then, and me a dancer. We loved exercise but our passion for rehabilitation would follow years later after personal injury experiences. We are a good team – there are not many husbands and wives who can work together!! We’re talking a lot about Pilates for Men, as so many men are not even aware of the benefits. Let’s talk about mobilising the spine. Pilates (when taught correctly) aims to safely mobilise each and every vertebra of the spine into every plane of motion. Vertebral segments can become ‘stuck’ when not mobilised regularly. This forces other parts of the spine to be ‘overused’ and can cause back pain. Spinal extension (as demonstrated here) is one of my favourite movements.

The thought of being the only male in the class can often be off putting for men who are thinking of starting Pilates. There are even some men who perceive it as too easy 🤣
It’s so frustrating as men get so much benefit from Pilates such as:
• Movement and mobilisation for their joints – especially spine and hips, so beneficial for those sat at a desk all day or for those driving for much of the day. This will help to avert back problems.
• Lots of spinal extension (safely taking the spine backwards) to counteract lots of forward flexion (taking the spine forwards) seen in manual workers – builders, carpet fitters etc.
• Core strength and stability, giving the spine support in order to endure the pressures of every day life, and enjoy and excel in other sports.
This is why we offer a Men Only Pilates class every Monday at 8.10pm. There are also many men in a number of our other classes, just ask us which classes would be most suitable and we’ll tell you! Neil is the teacher for many of our classes too!

1) Roll out of bed! Your lower back will thank you! Your body is at its most vulnerable as it’s been more static throughout the night. Gently roll onto your side with your knees bent up towards your chest, allow your feet down to the floor as you support your body with your top arm to bring you up sideways to a seated position.
2) Drink extra water in the morning as you’re dehydrated from having been asleep all night.
3) Whenever you encounter a stressful situation, take 3 long slow breaths in and out before tackling.
4) Play your favourite music whilst doing a mundane job such as clearing up, it will release feel good endorphins.
5) Do some Pilates mobilisation before bed.

Our boy was recently awarded his Jujitsu Red Belt by Jason Hindley of Kinkandojo. I like watching Jason teach, he is incredibly patient and has a great manner with the children. Following 2 consecutive ankle sprains whilst competing, her rehab has gone well and she’s generally back to full strength … but … she’s paused her rehab exercises because she's been very busy with schoolwork … it made me nervous when she was doing this competition recently. I know that she has suboptimal stability in those joints and if she doesn’t resume the exercises soon she’ll be at risk of further sprains!

Don’t stop your rehab just because you (temporarily) feel better!!!

Last week we had the joy of seeing both of our children in their school summer concert. Both play Saxophone and Piano. Posture is EVERYTHING when learning to play an instrument! I cannot tell you how many musicians we’ve seen over the years with pain due to repetitive suboptimal posture. Here is our girl practising her grade 7 piece 😍… you’re welcome 😜
